Using Hobbies to Increase Personal Training Results
One of my all time favorite quotes and one which I life my life by:
“from one thing, know ten thousand things”
― Miyamoto Musashi, The Book of Five Rings
As a Dallas personal trainer and someone who has been intimately involved in the world of exercise ans nutrition science for almost 20 years, I tend to relate almost everything new that I learn back to fitness, training, nutrition, etc.
Odd as it may seem, this insight that I have in the world of fitness science very often opens up deep and surprisingly accurate and almost instant insight into other fields that I am new to. This is not because I am particularly intelligent or anything. It is simply a natural consequence of
When you have a deep understanding of one thing, the universal principles that you have perceived in the underlying truths of the science can be carried over to another science, art, aspect of life and capitalized on to help you gain understanding and insight very quickly and accurately.
Now there is a bit of a catch here...
In order for this to be possible for you, you absolutely have to have studied some particular art or science long enough and deeply enough to have a deep understanding of it. If you have not actually ever "mastered" anything, how can you transfer your deep insight of expertise...?
However, don't despair, most people have some sort of passion that they have pursued with complete, unadulterated excitement and consistency. Even if its video games, eating deserts, or any other habit that may seem to be completely counterproductive or useless. It doesn't really matter what it is. What matters is that you have fully invested yourself into the activity so much, so whole-heatedly for so long that you have created a deep, almost intuitive-like knowledge regarding the subject.
For me this activity is exercise science. I remember when I stumbled across my first parallel between the world of training program design and the rest of the world. I was 16 years old and riding in the back of a friend's pickup truck in Midland, TX and something just "clicked" in my head and I suddenly saw deeply into the situation I was confronting and realized that everything I had learned through designing my workout programs and exercise programs for my friends now gave me highly useful insight in the outside world as well.
At the time I didn't realize the overall encompassing reality of the parallels in our world. I actually thought I had just randomly stumbled onto something that "happened" to have exactly parallel principles and it was just some freak coincidence. I have since discovered that these parallels are the rule rather than the exception in life.
So...how can you use this to lose more fat, get in better shape, gain more muscle, gain flexibility, etc?
Well, from understanding flows right actions, and from right actions flow right results.
In personal training, this is a very good thing...
If you can use your deep understanding of whatever your passion is to help you gain insight into the world of fitness, nutrition, and personal training...you can dramatically increase your results by utilizing that understanding to direct your actions more and more precisely in the directions that will enhance your progress.
Most people want results without effort. If you have mastered something in life, you know that results without effort do not exist. You must apply yourself and give your deepest efforts in order to achieve your deepest desires.
This is true whether we are speaking of fitness, personal relationships, finances, or anything else in life for that matter.
Use what you already know to help you achieve the fat loss and fitness you so desire!
